Scarlet furious by Ashley's decision vows to take revenge on him and decides to marry Melanie's brother despite still having feelings for Ashley. Soon after treacherous reigns of civil war take a hold of the country and men are forced to leave their families to fight in the war. Scarlett loses her husband in the war and decides to leave the quiet country life behind and move to a boisterous city.

There she meets with Rhett butler an adventurous man not very different than scarlet herself he's the only one who is able to see beneath the facade Scarlett has created for herself and he acknowledges the real passionate woman she is. However, war has taken its toll on everybody's life Ashley whom Scarlett still hopes to gain back is taken to prison and the city is invaded by   the enemy forces. Rhett helped Scarlett escape the city and return back to hometown only to her mother dead and her father distraught and her town in shambles.

At last, the war ends after taking so many things from Scarlet and she decides to take charge of rebuilding her hometown. she marries a rich merchant for his money but ironically, he also loses his life a while after their marriage. Rhett who'd had feelings for scarlet all this time finally proposes to her and she quickly accepts. Their marriage started happily but turned for the worse as time went on the two had similar personalities and were constantly quarrelling with each other.

Scarlett could also not forget her first love Ashley even after all these years and they gradually lost sight of what made them fall in love in the first place the death of their young daughter was the final push that drove the two to the edge of the cliff. Exhausted after all the ups and downs of the life together Rhett ultimately decides to leave Scarlet but as if in a moment of revelation Scarlett realizes how much he actually meant to her and that her desire to have Ashley was nothing more than a young girl's fantasy a strong passionate woman like Scarlett always gets what she wants so she decides to think of a way to earn back her true love ending the novel with her famous quote “tomorrow is another day”.
